Massage therapy is the application of oil or lotion on the skin in a way that affects the soft tissues of the body, prompting a healing response. Soft tissues include muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, although we can also have an effect on joints, nerves, vertebrae, the lymphatic and nervous systems. A typical massage treatment involves the patient undressing to his or her comfort level and lying inbetween sheets on a massage table. Only the areas that we discussed are being treated will be uncovered (ie. your back, or your legs).
Varying degrees of pressure can be used, and your feedback is invaluable to determining what your tolerance is. Establishing your pain tolerance is key to an effective treatment – if we exceed your tolerance and you don’t tell us, your tissues will brace against us in such a way that we won’t be able to be effective. On the other hand, some pain or discomfort is common and often necessary to exact the change in the tissues we are looking for. Pain during treatment is alright as long as it doesn’t exceed your tolerance. Often patients will describe it as “good pain.”
